A series of colored stripes running the length of the cloth (warp) that is reproduced exactly in the threads across the width of the cloth (weft). The color pattern is the point of emphasis and each particular combination (sett) distinguishes the different clan, family, dress, hunting and district tartans.

I use a 45″ Nilus Leclerc floor loom, a 25″ Schacht Baby Wolf floor loom, and an 18″ Schacht Wolf Pup floor loom. The Leclerc is my workhorse. I’ve had this loom since 1984 and it traveled with me from California to Alaska and back again.

For many years I attended the Alaska Scottish Highland Games. While there I demonstrated tartan weaving on my Baby Wolf loom. For more information on the Games, check out the Alaskan Scottish Club.

Each item is hand woven to your specifications, therefore the amount of time depends upon the item itself, as well as the type of yarn used. Generally, it will take one to three weeks from start to finish. That includes designing, warping, weaving and finishing. However, there may be a backlog of orders. When you place your order, please let me know when you will need the finished product.

To guarantee you receive your order by Christmas, place an order no later than September 1st.
